History of the city
The skeleton of a Neanderthal was found in a cave close to Düsseldorf in 1856.
Established in 1288, Düsseldorf was capital of the Duchies of Jülich-Berg before coming under the rule of the Counts Palatine of the Rhine.
In 1795, it was detroyed by the French and became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Berg with Murat and Napoleon Bonaparte as sovereigns. It was returned to Bavaria in 1801, and then given to Prussia in 1815?
